Beta carotene is a tetraterpene compound, often used as pigment or nutrient additive in food and animal nutrition, currently mainly produced by chemical synthesis or fermentation of triclosan. Beta carotene can be synthesized by acetyl coenzyme A(or pyruvate and glyceraldehyde3-phosphate) in 12 biosynthesis steps. As an oleurope-producing yeast, acetyl coa is in sufficient supply and can store highly hydrophobic terpene molecules in intracellular oil droplets, so it has the potential to produce beta-carotene.
